only takes about 10 mins. don`t even go if your check engine light is on. instant failure. I have had some cars i thought that wouldn`t pass ,pass. Some states if you fail will let you come back the second time for free

that depends on what state you live in. Most states have different rules rules regarding emissions tests. However, generally there shouldn't be any reason why you can't get it done on your lunch break, but bear in mind this will depend on how busy the shop is. If your employer is real strict on your returning to work on time then make an appointment but remember just because you have an appointment doesn't mean your car will go right in. It might be best to wait for the weekend and or when you ahve a day off. You stated that your car has numerous problems, if your check engine light is on that is an automatic failure on an emissons test.

I guess it depends on what state you are in, and what they do for the emissions test. And also where you take it. In California we have 2 different types of emissions test, one takes about 25 minutes or so, and the other around 40, but it varies depending on the shop and tech...

I would just call whoever you plan to go to, ask them and set up an appointment... They would know how long it takes them on average, and an appointment would make it go faster.

As others have said, it depends on the state. Ky's was only about 5 minutes assuming you didn't hit a line when you got there. Other states like NJ will take longer as they are more complete with the inspection. As your neighbors or call your family, they should have a good answer for your state. good luck

Ha ha ha! In Oregon the test itself takes about 1 minute. They stick a sensor in your tailpipe, have you rev it up to 2500rpm and you wither pass or fail.
