The water heater and furnace are usually separate. ~
I usually turn it off at the thermostat. That way I can bring it up quickly any time without having to relight the pilot.

Follow the gas line going into the furnace, there should be a valve close to but still outside the furnace, this valve may need a wrench to turn off and is used to shut off the gas to the furnace completely, this valve is mainly used when replacing the furnace or replacing parts. Further along the gas line will be another valve marked off, pilot, on - this valve may be under a cover of some king, just turn the valve to the off position. The instructions for lighting the furnace should be on a sticker, usually on the back of the main furnace cover.

If your furnace is less than 15 years old it won't have a standing pilot. If it is older than 15 years, it may have a standing pilot.
If it is one that does not have a standing pilot, you can safely turn off the furnace at the service switch, and if you are concerned about the gas, turn off the gas valve at the line valve or at the gas valve in the furnace.
If it is a furnace with a standing pilot, you will need to know how to light the pilot prior to shutting off the gas.
If you aren't sure about any of this, call your gas company and tell them you smell gas around your furnace. They will send out a technician to investigate. At that time, you can ask him/her how to shut it off safely.

You can do it safely at the furnace access door. Open the door and you will see a knob that has off, pilot, on. Turn to off.
