Genetics plays some part, however, many of the "greats" in the past have had humble beginnings. Funny though that most who classify as "genius", are considered Bi-Polar, Borderline...basically, genius is synonymous with mental illness. It might be the shift in perspective.

I doubt ethnicity is a factor. We've had many inventors who didn't receive recognition because they were the "wrong" ethnicity or color.

There's a potential for intelligence. If it's never used, what's the point?

Intelligence is one's ability to retain and apply past experiences to problem-solving. Sometimes, it's an inherent understanding of systems, seeing the "big picture". It's one's capacity to identify, comprehend and organize "stuff" in a logical way.

The Nature vs. Nurture question...

I feel genetics are like the foundation, the potential. Each person has a limit that they can reach if they work hard. Obviously different cultures have different needs to function in their society so different types of talents may be favored, respectively. And social class is only relevant in that the higher the class the easier it will be for you to gain a quality education, so chance are higher classes will have more people reaching thier potential, while those in the lower class will have a harder time and will have to work a lot harder for the same advantages.
