Are you supporting your mother-in-law, and does she meet all the requirements for you to claim her as a dependent? If so, then yes, you could claim an additional allowance for her, so from your previous question, that would take you to four.

If you are living with her but not providing more than half of her support, or if she has more than $3400 gross income, then no, you can't claim her as a dependent, and claiming 4 on your W-4 form would just get you in trouble at tax time.

If less taxes are withheld from your paycheck, your refund will be very small, or you might owe a little instead of getting a refund.

Edit for your additional info: If you are providing more than half of her total support and she has no income, then you can probably claim her as a dependent. There are a few more requirements also for you to be able to claim her. See IRS publication 501 for details - you can download it at irs.gov

If you receive a small refund, and you are filing your taxes correctly, by definition, your withholding is correct. The best answer you will EVER get from YA about what to claim on a W-4 is a link to the IRS on-line withholding calculator.

as a rule, you can't claim the mother in law unless you are her sole means of support. claim yourself and your wife, and any kids you have. The more you claim, the less they take per check, but at the end of the year, you could owe taxes. That hurts. Look at it like a windfall if you get money back.

You are correct in that a little will be withheld and you will not get a return. But how do you get to 4 allowances?
