I'm looking at business grad school at either San Diego State University or U. of Nevada at Las Vegas and I'm not sure which to choose. If you have lived in either of the cities or have gone to one of these colleges any insight you give would be appreciated!! (I'm curious how the weather is throughout the year, what there is to do, things like that) thanks!! :)

I've lived in San Diego and I live in Las Vegas right now.
The weather here is HOT HOT HOT and dry. I had bloody noses for 4 months when I first got here. Housing is more reasonable than SD, but everything else is sky high...power, cable, phone, DSL, car insurance, DMV fees (DMV lines are unbelievably long and slow). It seldom rains and when it does, it's like for 2 seconds and it's over. I have yet to find a recycling center here too. The water here is hard so be prepared for bottled water & front door water delivery (if you don't already use it). Drivers here are the absolute worst I've ever seen and the entire city is under constant construction (freeways & surface streets). UNLV is just off the strip and near the airport. I HATE driving down there...bad road design, too much traffic, noise, and jaywalkers getting plowed over by cars.

There's tons of shopping, but it's just like in San Diego so you aren't going to miss anything there. The Grand Canyon is maybe 1-2 hours away depending on where in the city you live but can take longer to get to if the Hoover Dam traffic is backed up. C'mon, it is Vegas so there's always something going on, both indoors & outdoors. Mt. Charleston is 30-60 minutes away, again, depending on where you live in the city and it's like's going to Shaver Lake or maybe even Big Bear.
There's Red Rock Canyon...lots of interesting hiking to do there.

If I were you, I'd stay in San Diego. Vegas is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't move here if I knew then what I know now. I'm trying to get out...VERY transient town.

You're talking about a couple of years of school, San Diego's better.

Vegas has improved and went through a boom but still has its share of rough areas.

Cost of living is cheaper in Vegas, but it's still got the desert town attributes.

I think if you can get a decent paying job in Vegas your money will go further than staying in SoCal. Plus it's 5 hours away if you want to cool down on the weekends.

Weather in SD is moderate all year...goes through rainy winters, worst case is a gloomy spring, Santa Anas in the fall.

Vegas is good if you get a state job, I wouldn't go there to work in the casinos unless I was trained up on the slot machines or card dealing.Which you can do in SD. I just think San Diego is the place you go to school, Vegas and Phoenix are where you move to next to get the most money for your degree.

Nightlife in SD is a little overpriced at the nice places, but you don't deal with the obnoxious tourists as much as LV.

I came to San Diego to attend SDSU in the '70s and haven't moved since. Their business school is very good; especially known for their international business program. Can't say I know about UNLV's though, BUT housing prices have skyrocketed in Las Vegas and are close to San Diego's now. I totally can't understand why as SD is so much more pleasant...ave temp in the 60s-70s year round as opposed to 6 months of furnace in LV. No beach there either. Gambling is available both places as the Indian casinos are all over SD now. As for the person who said LV's crime rate is lower than SD, well I'd like to see his evidence of that. The FBI statistics for 2006 shows San Diego as safer than Las Vegas http://lapdblog.typepad.com/lapd_blog/2007/01/la_crime_down_f.html

SD has a lot more going for it. If you are a student I doubt that state income tax will be a big concern for you; doubt if you'll be earning enough to be taxed at a 10% rate. Even if you were, you'd lose a lot of that with what you'd pay for air conditioning out there!!!

If I were you I would choose San Diego which stays between 50 and 80 per year as to Las Vegas which is 80-90 in the winter and 100+ all summer. not to mention SD is so much healthier than LV less crime and unless you gamble and like the high nightlife..you will get tired in LV of all the crap going on all the time...a moonlit walk on the beach is so much more lovelier...lots to do and clean air at SD...hope it helps

SAN DIEGO!!I currently live in San Diego and attend SDSU and I love every day! If you are concerned with weather, San Diego is known for having close to perfect temperatures all year long! You are right next to the zoo, wild animal park, awesome beaches and clubs, sea world, Legoland, Mexico, and much more!! Of course there is higher taxes and things will be a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. If you want great weather and loads of fun, pay a little more and go to SDSU. If you like hot deserts with gambling addicts and tourist all year, then UNV is best for you. Best of luck!

San Diego, by far. Climate is better, scenery is nice and there is the ocean. Las Vegas has the gambling stuff to the max, hot searing weather in the summer and boring scenery.

There is absolutely no way I'd ever live in California. The taxes will kill you, the housing prices are way unrealistic, and it's very crowded. I've spent time in San Diego and the quality of life there has really gone down hill big time from the flood of illegals going through. Las Vegas is a boom town with lots to do and half the crime. Houses are still high, but much lower than San Diego. While California taxes you to death, Nevada has no state income tax. It's a no-brainer.

Kent in SD

We've spent alot of time in both cities...San Diego wins hands down...weather is perfect almost year around, as opposed to Vegas with its' 100+ weather in late spring into the fall....it's a desert....costs wise, Vegas is getting to be as expensive as San Diego.

Have you ever heard of the internet? If not, it has many wonderful places that one can go to find out yearly weather conditions, local activities, etc. MORE IMPORTANTLY it has many sites that evaluate business schools around the USA.

The thing that should matter most in choosing a graduate is will it give you what you need for your future.
