I don't understand what the singer is trying to say. In the first 2 verses, he says that he understands that there's a lot of gossip in their town and that he doesn't believe the rumors about her cheating on him. And in the chorus, he says that even if they ARE true, he understands that she's "under the gun." But at the same time, the chorus also acknowledges that she IS "taking it on the run." Then in the 3rd verse, he talks about how he knows that she's lying and getting dressed up to go see another man. He says, "if you leave, keep running." But in the repeat of the chorus, it again says "I don't believe it, not for a minute." So does he think she's cheating or not? It sounds like he can't make up his mind. The song doesn't make sense. Please explain...

Most people's thinking is even more convoluted than that. At least he can formalize the pattern of his thinking into a song.
I don't know the lyrics, but most people have differing thoughts on the same thing. Part of you thinks something, part the opposite. Crazy, but normal.

thats about the time i quit listening to those guy
the live album was good and if i hadent given most of my vinyl away id listen to that right now :)
also there was a time when the band had a singer named Mike Murphy inbetween Kronin days,,, Throw the Chains Away was the tune

The "I don't believe it, not for a minute" is her trying to keep him from kicking her out with a lie.

He wants her to come clean, is she cheating or not? He suspects she is but wants to know for sure.
