I swam a little less than a mile and I thought switching sides on the side stroke every couple minutes worked really good. What do you think? Plus, what muscles work different strokes when swimming?

dude, freestyle will kick that a.ss. switch it up a bit and you'll be fine. breast and side stroke are great alternators, since you can switch sides on the side stroke. I usually always start out with freestyle for a few hundred yards then start switching it up a bit until I feel rested and go back to freestyle and then keep the cycle going for the rest of the swim.

As your most efficient stroke, freestyle is the best option for any distance where speed is a factor. If you are not competing than you may feel free to mix the strokes but this is not the most efficient choice. The turnover rate for freestyle is the greatest as is the sighting ability and speed output. In a competitive situation freestyle is the most physcially profitable choice which is why you rarely see open water distance swimmers or triathletes swimming anything else.

If you are trying to conserve energy for with the sidestroke or breastroke. Backstroke is good for distance but requires spotters or lines to ensure you do not go off course in open water. In the pool, miles of backstroke is a possibility but is still not as efficient as freestyle.

Swimming works your entire body although certain strokes focus more on certain muslce groups such as back/shoulders/core for butterfly and chest/arms for breast.

Personally for any "lengthy" swim I like to switch my strokes up.I pretty much stay away from "freestyle" because if your going any distance,it will tire you out the fastest.
I would switch up between back stroke and breast stroke,and some side stroke.(If your swimming and want to get fit,do as much freestyle as you can stand)Keep moving and you will work your whole body with no impact that is the beauty of swimming.

Personally breast stroke is always the easiest for me going long distance, freestyle is the best if you want distance,speed and a good work out.

Anything but butterfly, pretty much. I usually swim freestyle if I'm practicing and doing a distance swim, however, you may get bored so just switch up a little.

I love freestyle! Mix it up a bit. Try this: 1/2 freestyle, 1/4 backstroke 1/8 breastroke 1/8 freestyle.

If you're looking for speed, freestyle's your best bet.

If you're looking for exercise and endurance, mix it up. Keeps muscles from getting overworked, and lets tired muscles rest. You can also do lifeguard-breaststroke to catch your breath without stopping.

My swim teams hold marathons for charity, where people donate money to each swimmer that commits to swim a certain number of laps. There's a time limit, so the faster you swam, the more money you earned for the charity.

Freestyle - but limit your legs - use mostly arms and stay streamlined. Check out the "Total Immersion" Swim Technique. Alot of long distance swimmers and Triathletes use this technique.

i swim and freestyle would be the best stroke for long swims. its the fastest stroke and easy to do.
