English should be the official language because it serves to unite rather than divide people when they share a common language and can communicate, Since this nation was established(until recently anyway)immigrants from around the world learned English as part of their assimilation process.

What would be the advantage of doing this? I think thats the question that needs to be asked. I know that in TX, there are enough people who speak spanish that there is no cost involved in providing this service to people. Besides that, I really feel that we need to push for more language skills being taught instead of less. I've spent most of my life being really proud of being fluent in two languages and a basic knowledge of a third. Time spent in Germany and Quebec has taught me that every other place but the US, two languages is more the standard than the exception.
Granted, English is the lingua franca of the moment but my mother grew up in Europe and remembers a time when French was more the standard, widely known language. Things change fast and rather than encouraging people to limit themselves to english (or trying to be puntative to those that come to this country and don't learn the language) we need to encourage multiple language acquisition by US residnents in every way possible.

confident. Its been the stable language of usa for years now. It makes me unwell that each and every time I examine training to any element has different languages while English is the top language. additionally i'm tried human beings speaking different languages while in public. you basically donot be responsive to what they are asserting and that they may well be speaking approximately hurting you and additionally you don't be responsive to it. There could be a regulation which you will basically speaking english while interior the standard public.

It should be, for some reason I thought it already was.
All immigrants should assimilate to the "melting pot" called America.
Part of assimilating is learning the common language, in this country, it is obviously English. Local and federal government should not cater to all languages in its day to day business, it would make for much inefficiency and undermine the immigrants' responsibility of learning english.

I have attempted to converse with many Americans and I am not entirely convinced that English really is the official language of America.

I do only because it is what was taught to me at birth and without my having been given a choice.
It is what was taught to me in school from 1st grade on without my having been given a choice.
And it is the language that the majority speaks for those same reasons.
To make more allowances for visitors or new American's than you do for native American's who did not make the choice to BE American's seems unfair to me.
Choices should have consequences to them. If you choose to leave America and go somewhere else you should expect (and will) have to deal with the same level of consequence.

Most definately, with the exception of native americans, the common language has always been english.
Are we submitting ourselves now to be any lesser of a people?
We are all created the same, and one person is no better than the other, but this is our country, we speak english !!

I agree. All of America...we should conquer all of it and force them to learn English, then set up business there, and then that would stop all illegal immigration because the Mexicans would already be in America, as Mexico would be in our ownership.

I agree, I don't feel that I should have to learn another language in order to maintain a job. I should just learn a language because I want to. I was watching something on television, I believe it was Hogan Knows Best...they had moved to Miami...and they had to learn Spanish in order to understand the people that worked in the stores...how unfair is that.
