I've heard 2 versions my whole life. One is Hailey with a short 'a' sound. The other is Halley with a long 'a' sound. I've pronounced it Hailey my whole life, so it's the version I prefer to stick with, but I'd still like to know which pronounciation is correct. Thanks!

The most standard pronunciation of "Halley" is [hæli] (IPA), to rhyme with "valley". The once-standard alternate pronunciation [heɪli] (to rhyme with "Bailey") led to rock and roll singer Bill Haley naming his band Bill Haley and the Comets. Edmund Halley himself probably pronounced his name [hɔːli], with the "hall-" rhyming with "call" or "small".

Actually, the most common/standard pronunciation is to have Halley rhyme with Valley.

One of the links below has an audio sample indicating as such.

I do not have a clue...I've always called it Halley's, not Haileys but a bit of trivia....did you know that Mark Twain was born in the year of Halley's comet and died the next time it appeared. Might not mean much but I thot it interesting. He came in with the comet and left with the comet....Regards

Usually it's Halley as in hat (or Halle Berry) but the other pronunciations are Hailey or Hawley.

The original pronunciation was rhyming with "valley." That's the only pronunciation I ever heard until rock musician Bill Haley came along. I really think we're doing one of the greatest astronomers of all time a disservice by changing the pronunciation of his name to that of a rock musician, and not even a very good one!

When I was in grade school they told us it was HAY-LEE. Then when chunks of it were visible some other time they told us it was HAL-EEE.

According to many resources the most standardized pronounciation is that rhyming with valley.

In New Zealand we say "Hay-lee" but maybe its a regional thing like how people pronounce tomato.
