In England we have this ridiculous thing going on of people supporting who ever they want, the days of supporting your local team is well and truly over. for example in england Man United are the most supported team by some clear difference but in Manchester where they are based they are second behind there rivals Man city by a large margin, My local team is west ham based in east london, out of my 11 close mates me and 1 more person supports them the rest either support Man U or Liverpool teams which are some 170 miles away and they are never can or intend to go watch them live. Is this the same in the States or is this growing trend ther aswell?

In the past 10 years, we're starting to see some teams get bigger and bigger in popularity at the expense of local teams. It's particularly true in baseball. The Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs have definite national followings. When they go into cities that have teams that have lost a lot over the past 10 years, their fans drown out the locals. I'm not sure how many of the fans are traveling and how many are really in the other cities, but it's a definite trend and probably not good for the game overall.

Basketball is more related to individuals -- Michael Jordan had fans wherever he went. Football has avoided that for the most part, although some teams do have a larger following than others (Dallas traditionally had a big national fan base).

Fine question.
