I am ordering a new computer (Dell XPS 410 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo w/ 4GB memory) and i use my computer mostly for music and the internet, dont' really play games. is it worth the money ($100) to upgrade from the integrated 7.1 audio dell provides to the soundblaster X-Fi Xtrememusic card?

That computer is kind of overkill for just everyday internet browsing and playing music. I would go with 2gigs of ram instead of 4, get a smaller processor then the 2.4 ghz. Maybe the 1.8 or 2.1.

With the money you save you can get a Sound Blaster Audigy card and drop it in. Youll get better audio quality and features with the aftermarket card over the integrated motherboard sound.

That computer will last you for quite some time, just weigh the pros and cons of cost vrs. use.

Do you have expensive, top quality speakers or headphones?

If you don't, then it isn't worth it. Besides, you can always buy the card from newegg and install it yourself.

Also, for music listening/ripping and browsing the web that PC is OVERKILL. Especially the 4gb of RAM...what does Dell charge for 4gb of memory? It can be bought at newegg for $130 on up. And an e6600 is most definitely overkill for your uses- if you don't game, edit raw video/photos, or do heavy multi-tasking you paid for a Ferrari and are driving it like a senior citizen drives a Lincoln.

You should have bought a low-end AMD X2 dual core based system w/512mb or RAM and added 2gb ($65) from newegg. You would save a bunch and could have gotten a nice soundcard and some good quality speakers.

It would be nice if Dell offered something in between, Integrated is pretty much junk if you like music, but X-Fi is a bit overkill if you are not a gamer. But if you have to choose, go with the X-Fi, if you really like listening to music on your system, you will not be satisfied with integrated audio.

Wait till you get the computer and try it, if you don't like the sound then you can order. don't waist your money in advance.
