Right now I have a 10 gallon tank with one male betta fish, heater, air pump, and filter. I also have 3 fake plants, a fake rock set-up, and some gravel. I would like to introduce some neon tetras and cory catfish because I've been reading that they would get along fine with my betta in it's aquarium. How many tetras and cories should I purchase and what else do you think I need?

I'm not sure about the cats, but I always buy fish in doubles anyway, unless its like an algae eater because I find that fish prefer to swim and play with their own kind.
However, tetras are schooling fish. Its best to buy at a very minimum about 4 or 5 so they can school together.
I think 1 betta, a school of tetras, 2 cats and maybe one or two other fish such as an algae eater would be perfect, but I wouldnt go anymore than that.

Add 3 Corries and 5 Neon Tetras, if any fish die, replace them so you have 3 Corries, 5 Neons, and 1 Betta at all times. Neons are famous for getting lonely and Corries do best in a group, the most Corries you could keep in 10 gallons is 3. Thankyou so much for actually researching before buying! So many people just go buy fish that they think look cool, and 2 months later, the fish are the siz of the aquarium. Good job! Don NOT get anything that has the name "Algae Eater" or "Plecostomus", they get huge (up to 2 feet long) and can be aggressive. Somebody said Corries can be aggressive, but that is not the case, Corries are probably the least aggressive fish in existance. They won't bother your Neons at all.

I think you need one main "center piece", unless the rock set up is one, and then you'll have enough inside. The only other thing I would suggest is one of those pictures you put on the back of your tank. It totally changes it for the better! As for the fish, I would go up to 10 of the neon's. The catfish is another story. I have two that I got when they were little and they are really big now. (My tank is 55 gallon) And they are kinda mean. They "can" pick on the other fish. They don't alway's, but they do sometimes. And neon's are very little and take forever to grow. And don't ever get really big. And if you don't know, NEVER get another male beta. Only one per tank. They will fight to the death. If you can find them, I got 2 "rainbow fish". They are so cool! I would reccomend them to anyone. They are actually kinda smart! When I set in front of my tank to watch the fish, they will come over in front of me and watch me! I swear that is what they are doing! And they move in the water very different from any other fish I have. (I have about 30, all different kinds). If you get them, just watch the way they move. It's really cool. They can even go backwards. Really! They will back up when something is coming or they want to move back. No other fish of mine does that. Their faces are even kinda cute. Not "fishy" looking. Sounds funny, but I just love my rainbow fish. (As if you can't tell! LOL!) Well, hope this helps. Have fun with your tank.

Honestly, i would avoid the tetras. I have never had any luck with neon tetras in a 10 gal. You could certainly get a school of them, but that would require you to keep your tank uber-clean, if you have many other fish in your tank. Tank cleaning is one of those chores that it is easy to procrastinate on. Also, your tank sounds a little crowded. You won't get much of the cool schooling effect if there isn't much room for them to swim :D.
