I personally don't find them to have much of an odor but several people find it offensive.
I have worked for a vet and he told me to compare the cat food with ferret food I have fed mine the special kitty and mine have lived to be about 9-12 years.
this vet is one I helped with ferret rescue in NY and he specialized in ferrets.
I have one now that is going on 6 years old and has been raised on the cat food.
they need exercises and a lot of attention but they also sleep allot.

Ferrets so have a smell to them but can smell realllly bad if you don't keep their cages clean and give them a bath when needed. Don't want to over bathed them cause they could develop a skin and fur condition. I would constantly clean their cages and give them baths and there was a ferret spray you could use to make them smell pretty. But no matter what a ferret will always have that natural smell to them. Yes, Ferrets have to be descented and neauterd to be sold legally. Pet stores aren't allowed to sell them reguardless. They eat some kind of pellets, ours ate the Marshall brands which is highly recommended along with a couple of other brands that I cannot remember the names. If you are responsible and care for them as you would a child then you are a good candidate for a ferret. Mind you, ferrets are like little children, the climb up things they shouldnt, they chew on things that can cause intestinal blockages, which is the number one killer of ferret along with being squashed because they love to dig into the couches, in matresses and anything their little paws can get to. I have learned some pretty rough lessons with ferrets and they also will fit through space so narrow you wouldnt believe. They cannot be left unattended at all. I had to ferret proof my house big time with the two I had, but other than that, they make the best pet I ever had, fun to play with. I am sorry that this may not convince your parents but I hope they will change their minds if you are up to all the care needed. And about the cat....you may have to keep them away from it in case the cat dont like the ferret..

Well, I would have to side with your parents if you are so willing to get rid of your current cat. Cats and ferrets can co-exist just fine. However, a ferret will cost 2 to 3 times more in vets bills than a cat will.

Descenting is a surgical procedure and costs a good amount of money, well into the hundreds. Neutering or spaying will cost a lot too.

Just keep in mind that a ferret will cost money. You will have to get it a suitable living space. It will have to have outside time from the cage. Also, they can open cabinets, so you will have to ferret proof your house.

Do some research before you decide if you want one or not.

Many animals may be cute, but that does not mean that you should have them for a pet.

Ferrets can be descented surgically, but that cost hundreds of dollars, and unless you can get a job and pay for it, I would be unwilling to agree to getting a ferret if I were your parent. The descenting surgery does not get rid of the complete musky body scent.

Ferrets are very independent, and do not like being litter box trained in many cases they will go to the bathroom anywhere they feel like it. Are you going to be wanting to clean up poop and pee when this happens?

They also can be vicious and bite, generally completely unprovoked. These
are all things that I am sure your parents know about, and do not find very appealing.

I know two families who have owned ferrets and gone through many of the things that I have listed here.

When you are an adult over the age of eighteen, and working to earn a paycheck then you can have any pets that you want.

You are not showing yourself to be a responsible pet owner by indicating that you would "give up" your cat in favor of another animal. Pets are living creatures and when you adopt them as members of your family you are taking on responsibility for it's well being for it's life. You cannot be giving it up on a whim, it is a living creature with a heart and feelings.

Just a little aside, you are breaking one of the rules on here by promising people points, and you are not going to convince your parents of something they do not want to do by telling them what a bunch of strangers are saying on the Internet.

Good luck.

In order to de-scent a ferret you need to take it to a vet to have surgery. It still doesn't get rid of the smell entirely but you can give it a try.

Hey, any high-quality kitten foods work for a ferret. My best friend breeds them and that's what she feeds hers.

De-Scenting is getting rid of the smell and you have to take him to the vet and get surgery.

Ferrets are pretty hard to take care of, they like to crawl under the couch and stuff.

MMMMM

Well, I don't know if I'm telling you what you want to hear but ferrets are - well - they really do stink! I had a friend with two of them and his house always smelled like urine. Plus when they climb on you and their nails touch you your skin gets red and itchy.

Cats are WAY better pets, in my opinion.

OK, ferrets even when descented, smell. they have this odor that most rodents have, and marsupials as well. my sister had one, and it had to live outside. they like marsh mellows, and can use a litter box...but i cant tell you if they eat cat food or not, so...i hope this helps a little if any! good luck trying to persuade your parents!

Please do not devalue your cat. Your cat is your pet! He is your responsibility and you made a commitment when you brought him home!!

Your parents said no...think about it after you are old enough to move out of your parents house.
