I haven't seen any data on the subject lately. A quick count reveals the Sabres played 44 such games in 2006-07, which is a little more than half.

There are a couple of factors here. One-goal games can get "lost" because teams will pull a goalie in the final minutes in order to tie things up, but may give up an empty-netter in the process.

However, in the last few years the rules have changed. Teams have been anxious to get to overtime in order to claim a point in the standings. I would guess that teams are a little more conservative in the third period in close games than they used to be, in order to be sure of a point.

And of course, the shootout eliminated ties, turning all of those results into one-goal games. So, the number for hockey probably has to be at a record high.
