does it cut off the babys oxygen(doesn't the baby get it's oxygen through the blood though), or would it be fine? not for a long time, but just swimming underwater for a little bit(across a 15ft pool, not very far). is it safe or not? also wondering if handstands in the pool were dangerous, i started thinking, they could be because the baby is in the amniotic fluid, and then you trun over, and they baby doesn't turn quick enough, when you come back down, could that snap or get the cord tangled????? seems like a bad idea, i won't be doing any, just wanted others opinions.
thanks -Juli
(in my 10th week of pregnancy)

It is perfectly OK to swim. The baby gets oxygen from the blood that is in the umbilical cord. The baby is water also so you aren't going to hurt it. It won't snap or tangle the cord either. The baby moves so much that the cord is wrapped around him/her at times anyway. So go ahead and swim. Swimming is one of the best exercises anyway. If it were dangerous, doctors would tell us so.

swimming is great to do during pregnancy. I floated in the pool almost until I went into labor. (also went hiking but that's another story) going underwater will definately not harm the baby, you come up for air, and in doing so the baby will also get oxygen. Your body will take care of the little one inside you! The umbilical cord is very very tough, and doing a handstand will not snap it!! Throughout your pregnancy your baby will do flips and circles inside you, and it doesn't get tangled or snapped, it's probably a good thing that you won't be doing any though, as you will be getting larger, and less coordinated. But swimming is a great idea, especially as you get larger, it will take the weight off your body and will reduce all the pressure. My doctor told me I could swim until I lost the mucous plug or my water broke. The plug doesn't come out until just before going in to labor, so you have plenty of time to swim!
Have fun during your pregnancy, afterwards it seems so short!

Can Pregnant Women Swim

It is perfectly safe to swim while pregnant. The baby doesn't breathe with his lungs until he's outside of you and the cord is cut. Some women even give birth in water.

Going underwater is perfectly fine. The baby won't run out of oxygen unless you do.

at 10 weeks you have absolutly nothing to worry about. Your movemnts are felt so slightly in the womb that it cant disturb the baby. even handstands are safe. No high dives, OK!

i wouldn't suggest handstands but i saw this special on TLC and they had some families give birth in water. They say the water helps relax the mothers body and helps her.

You should talk to your doctor. Swimming is a GREAT exercise when you are pregnant. As for handstands...I don't know, but I wouldn't do it.
