When celebrities make appearances on show like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, etc., are they paid? If not, are their expenses paid? Or, are they just "paid" in publicity?

I think that they are just paid in publicity. They don't do interviews to make money. They do it so that more people will know who they are. e

Yes, but WHO pays them depends on the celebrity and why they're doing the interview. If they are promoting a new movie, most likely they aren't getting paid by the interviewer...but by the movie producers. If they're someone who is very popular and refuses interviews most of the time...a show will pay big money if you'll agree to give them an exclusive interview.

Celebrities are paid to work, and the people who pay mostly point out when most stars have to meet and greet their audience. That's how agents and movie/record companies get their money's worth. Sometimes a star will interview or show up at an event for charity or family/friend help.

When they show up on those programs they are "pitching" one of thier movies or projects.

The studio that is paying for the advertising pays the expenses.
