By "true" hip hop head, I mean those of you who know that hip hop is a culture and not a genre of music........

Can anybody give me some good underground artists to check out....I already know and listen to Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Bootcamp Click, Immortal Technique, Mos Def, MF Doom, Black Ice, etc. But I'm looking for some other underground artists who, like the above-mentioned artists, have substance and meaning to their songs and lyrics. None of that "wannabe gangsta" bullsh*t.

Looking forward to your responses, and thanks in advance.

And please, if you don't know any artists other than Jibbs, Mims, Unk, Huey, Lil Wayne, Young Joc, Crime Mob, and all that other garbage, please don't answer, because you're not a true fan of real rap music. lol (I know they're gonna answer my question anyway)

Again, to you true rap fans, bring 'em on!!!

Smooth Jones....I'm from VA...Yeah, I have some Skillz in my playlist. Dude is nice. I'll check out the others you mentioned.

And a lot of the other artists everyone's mentioned, I "did" know of them, just didn't list them. Seems like there's a lot more "true" hip hop heads here at Yahoo Answers than I thought lol. Sweeeeeeeeeet!!

Y'all have given me a bunch of artists that I haven't heard of, too, so many thanks, again. I'll keep the question open and hope to get even more.

I love hip hop. And I guess you can call me a hip hop head. But I believe true hip hop heads do listen to othergenres. Because a lot of hip hop songs combine different genres. Like the classic song by Run Dmc "Walk This Way" beleive it or not that made hip hop artists venture into different genres. But you are right. There are a lot of people out their that wouldn't give other Geres a chance. They just love hip hop and I dontthink there's anything wrong with that.

I'M GLAD YOU'RE HERE!! FINALLY SOMEBODY WHO APPRECIATES REAL HIP HOP!!!!!!!! I got hella underground artists. You might have to go their Myspace pages, but some of these artists are flying low on the mainstream.

Check out Thad Reid, he has a song called Top of The Heights that's hot right now in underground hip-hop.

Also check out Kidz In The Hall, they came out with an album in October 2006 and in my opinion it's pretty good. If you like Lupe or Kanye, you'll like them.

Little Brother is one of the most popular True Hip Hop groups out right now. They've had some of the best beats over their tenure in the rap game (thanks to 9th Wonder) and they have an album coming out sometime this summer.

I can tell you now.. I am a fan of Crime Mob(some of the songs), a huge Lil Wayne fan(dude spits with swagger), 50 fan, T.I. fan and all of that.

But I am a HUGE fan of underground artists and some mainstream artists.

Kanye, Common, and Vakill are pretty good artists, but are you missing the greatest underground duo of all time: LITTLE BROTHER!!!!!! Those are some talented dudes. You named most of the good ones, but Canibus is good, Killah Priest, Wu Tang, The 4th Disciple and that's all I have
