I would call you an unpublished author. There are many published authors that had to sent their work out hundreds of times to get published. The act of being published did not elevate their work and suddently make it better.
You are an author.

I write, although none of my things have been published yet. I consider myself a writer and, when I do get published, I'll upgrade myself to an author.
I'm sure you can be either/or, however. Whichever you want to call yourself is fine.

Ask Stephen King, who went years without having what became world-wide bestseller's picked up by a publisher. I believe you are an author when you express yourself in art.

I'd say you're a writer who could call yourself an author if you took that extra step.

I've never held a bias towards either one. They mean the same thing. The only difference is that one sounds better at cocktail parties.
P.S. --Just a writer?
