During a get-together with colleagues, that's how someone described me over a few glasses of wine in my presence, obviously meaning well. But... is being "laconic" a good thing?

Since laconic means using few word while being concise, I would say it's a good thing.
Guys who yakety-yak are usually full of sh*t.
Guys who are laid back and quiet are usually confident and definitely very attractive. It shows intelligence.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

How can you be laconic, sitting together over a few glasses of wine? This only happens to me if I'm very tired from a long day's work.

But if there is no wine around, I can be laconic, too.

I think it is boring for other people to sit together with someone who does not talk much. The gift of being entertaining should not be neglected.

On the other hand, your answers that I have read so far were neither laconic nor boring.

Being laid back means watching other people doing things, instead of doing things yourself. Again, I do not think this is a good thing. Maybe it was the wine.

Laid back sounds relaxed and cool, especially here in Southern California! Didn't we invent the term?
Since one definition of laconic is 'concise' I'd take that as a compliment too!
What is the reverse? Up tight and confused?
Sheesh! Say 'thank you' to your friend!
Actually, I'd be more interested in what kind of wine you were drinking and what you were talking about!

I think it is fine.I mean that's the Aussie and New-Zealander way of Life.I firmly believe one should not strive so hard to accomplish so much (unless u were destined to be great or to do something nobody has done before).
But then say again I should not over-laconic such that it becomes permentantly rooted in your belief system. It impars your ability to do the simplest things
