To the knowledgeabble gundam fans out there: Does Kira really die at the hands of the evil Shin Asuka?!!! Please tell me! I'm dying to know, and can't wait until the ninth DVD is released in English! Thank you!

He doesn't. He's alive. By shutting down the nuclear reactor of Freedom Gundam, he's able to prevent a total meltdown. Archangel manages to escape. Several episodes pass. A lot of events conspire that would eventually lead Athrun to choose which side he really belongs. That's all you need to know for now. By the way, Gundam SEED Destiny was great at the beginning until they brought back that stupid Kira Yamato & his band of "merry men". I'm ranking Destiny as the WORST Gundam story ever. The mecha are cool, the stories aren't.

Kira didn't die. He was able to prevent the explosion of the Freedom's nuclear reactor by pressing on the off switch at the right moment. He was rescued and is now safe and sound recuperating inside the Archangel (yup, they are also alive!).
Athrun would face a similar scenario later in the series while escaping from ZAFT. And once again Shinn did it.
