They think they can get away with it...
I agree that cheating is wrong, and it's better to get a 40 or a 60 on a test without cheating and being honest than to risk getting a 0 (and sometimes causing the other person to also get a 0), feeling guilty, and possibly getting into greater trouble.

humans are basically animals.
they take the path of least resistance for
the next possible reward.
animals often dont' think of the consequences
for an instantaneous gratification.
School is designed to weed out the thinkers
from the non thinkers. if getting a deserving
grade is what you think, that proves you think.

Because some students can and they will as long as someone lets them skate off their work.. I do not have to worry about someone askng me to copy because they would easily earn what I have been earning for a low grade this summer...LOL

Because, when you don't know Algebra II and you see someone who does its a common urge to sit near or next to them and copy so they'll get a good grade, I'm sure we all have done it.

i new a kid in engineering school who cheated his way through and would almost always get an A. He would copy, hide notes , take phone pictures anything! He never got caught and had a really high gpa.

For the off chance that they may get away with it and not have to use their minds and actually work for their grades?
or really it's just that they haven't realized that homework or tests are for their benefit to actually learn something and get somewhere in life later on...ah neophytes

becuase they are too lazy to study and take quality time and thinking on a test. they want to get it done fast with a good grade to boot soo they can play all the card games at a table they want

With many it has to do with laziness.
With the other half, it has to do with the fact that many teachers just odn't know how toteach properly.
