I just purchased a new computer a couple months ago and I looked into this question. Turns out the Intel chips tend to perform better in benchmark test, but unless you are doing some high end gaming or video editing, either one would probably be fine for you.
One thought though. If you have the option, don't get Windows Vista. My new computer came with Vista and I'm very close to going back to XP. It's not that Vista doesn't work, it's just that it's not as stable as XP. Mainly you'll notice that a lot of programs and hardware either don't work well with Vista and some don't work at all.
By the way, I got the Althlon 64 X2 dual core and I am very happy with the results. But I did need to add more memory because 1GB is not really enough with Windows Vista.

The 4800 does not compare on todays prices to the E6600. You can get a AMD 6000 for the same price. Now this chip is equivalent to the E6600 for many tasks, but I would still get the E6600 with a motherboard that supports P35. P35 chipsets are the latest and will be forward compatible with the next gen chips coming out. This will allow you to change you CPU in 2 years time without changing RAM/Motherboard again!

The E6600 is faster than the 4800+. The 5600+ is roughly equivelent in performance to the E6600, but the 4800+ is a bit behind both. This is nothing against AMD as some people have seemed to be bashing them, they make very high quality processors and I would not worry at all about quality if you purchased one. But in this case, the Intel you asked about is faster.

I'd go with the Intel Core 2 Duo... most AMD Processors are pretty good, but the Intel Core 2 Duo is THE BEST processor you can get right now.
(for a non-64bit environment, that is)

I think the Intel processor is the way to go.
I've only had limited exposure to the AMD processors, but all of them have seemed slower than an Intel in the same processor range.
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz in an HP dv6000 and it ROCKS!!!

I believe this is a matter of opinion. On one hand you have intel fans the other amd fans. I myself prefer intel. I believe the intel chip is more advanced however, there is scientific data that does prove otherwise. Check out this site. It may help you decide better exactly what it is your looking for. If it's a gaming rig I can only recommend intel on a nvidia board. Good luck.

I would go with Intel Core2 Duo and it rocks. You would be better off with it because Intel will have something called "Penryn" - in the works - which is a direct replacement for this if you decide to upgrade CPU at later time. I have an Extreme version and love it.

Core 2 Duo! All the way! Fantastic processors!!! I have one and its great for everything, including gaming. The 64-bit processors are only going to help you if you have a 64-bit version of Windows, or if you go to a Linux 64-bit distro

intel has always been ahead of amd. although, amd seems to survive due to its low costs. for a budget computer use amd. if you want to be really multitask, get core 2duo, but not the top of the range 2.8 ghz, its too expensive. get a 1.8ghz and a motherboard with overclocking features to reach 2.4 ghz. it will be enough.
