ahem. alchemy good times, good times...
well the study of alchemy had it's roots in mythology according to a little known (pre roman)frank myth that there was a god of fire who struck a deal with the god of metal, he gave the god of metal the power to make new things (like bronze) out of metal in exchange for the ability to turn lead into gold. (go figure)
well some idiots figured that they would be able to do that too, (they didn't) however they found several acids, elements, and made many contributions to science (accidentally)
basically alchemy is the process of turning lead into gold, (or any other metal if they could) and/or to find the Sorcerer's Stone which turned metal into gold. the sorcerer's stone was named after the alchemists who wore rediculous get-ups and people thought they were magicians.
OF COURSE no one ever could and modern science has proved it impossible because lead is stable. otherwise it COULD MAYBE, MAYBE decay (yes i said decay) radioactively into gold.
why do you ask?

Alchemy is the father of Chemistry. It dates back five thousand years BC when Ancient Egyptian would mixed different metals to make strong alloys of metal. The idea of changing lead to gold began here. Issac Newton was an alchemist one point.

Alchemy was the brainchild of Dark Age scientists. It was the science of turning normal metal into gold or making gold out just minerals. Kings and Queens would spend large amounts of money attepting to discover a succesful formula for this, but to no avail.

Alchemy is an ancient science of transmuting one material into another. (So basically...Chemistry)
The main quest of Alchemy was to find the fabled "Philosopher's Stone" that could supposedly turn lead into gold.
