I've watched it 50 times and can't figure it out the meaning, please help its driving me crazy

The package was sent by the artist Bettina we see at the very beginning and the very end of the movie. Her personal style (as we see in her art) is to put angel wings into everything, so we see them on the package as well.
On the island, Chuck goes through all of the packages that washed up, opening them to see if there's anything he can use in the contents. For some reason (which even he's not sure of at first) he doesn't do that to the package with the angel wings.
After Chuck's been on the island for 4 years, a broken Port-a-Potti washes up. Chuck stands it up and thinks about how he can use it. He notices the wind catching it and knocking it over, which starts wheels turning in his head. He looks at the package and notices that the angel wings have a slight resemblance to the broken walls of the Port-a-Potti. This gives him the idea to use the walls of the Port-a-Potti as a sail. Then he builds a raft with a sail, which proves to make the difference in his getting off of the island. When all he did was paddle, he couldn't get through the breakers surrounding the island.
After he's rescued, he delivers the package back to Bettina, with the "this package saved my life" note because the angel wings on the package gave him the idea of making the sail, which is how he got off the island.

I know it doesn't have anything to do with the movie itself, but I'd really like to see WHAT was in that package. That's one of those movie things that keep bothering me... like the one in Lost in translation- I desperately want to know what has Scarlett whispered into Bill Murray's ear :p

He was first and foremost a company man. The contents were entrusted to his company for delivery. Leaving that package unopened was also symbolic of his hope for a return to his former life.
Besides, if he'd opened it he would never have gotten to meet that beautiful redhead which left us with hope for his future love life without Helen Hunt.

ins't that the package he delivered to the chick at the end. And then left off with him at a crossroads. The ultimate employee, see if we were all like that and worked for fed-ex the world would be right again

by having him not open the package, it leaves you wondering at the ned of the movie if he might hook up with the female artist that was ment to recieve it before the plane went down.............that's my take on it........i don't really think that there is a true meaning to it, just written in to aid with the endingof the movie.

The drawing on it fascinated him, and he was determined to deliver it intact to the intended recipient (which the movies leads us to believe is his future lady!)

It was his only hope. He knew he would deliver it, meaning he HAD to live to give it to that lady. It symbolized HOPE for survival and getting off that island.

It gave him a reason to get off the island. So he could deliver that one package. Nerd. :)
