Art is a type of communication. Unlike prose and other simpler recording mechanisms, the point of art is usually to provoke an emotional response in the audience. Because emotional experiences are so varied and often in response to a variety of non-emotional physical datum, art itself is equally varied. Some is accessible, some obscure, and most art is of relative and subjective value, depending of course, on its specific evocative capability.

Most humans have an interest in art and often at least dabble in one or two forms of expression. Some people have a lot more to say in that context than others, and, as with any skill, most people can learn to produce art better with training and time. There is a general agreement on some types or works of art that are considered to be of particularly good quality, which also suggests that there are qualities possessed in art which are not entirely subjective, even if there are often subjective elements present.

Also, because most humans are constantly emotional, almost any material might be viewed as a form of art, depending only on its presentation, environment, and the audience. Thus you can see instances of 'junk art', 'performance art', and a number of other oddities.

For some people art is entertainment and for some it is quite serious business, with the entire spectrum around and between. Corporations like to purchase art, usually purely as a status symbol or the create an impression of empathy where none truly exists. But since humans are so wickedly complex and varied, you are going to see equally complex and varied roles for things they interact with.

No role... art is an expression of ego, my view of the world made into paint, writing, picture, sculpture, music... to make sure others can view things as I view them.

In any case it is an escape for people out of their society... an escape that is better than drugs, murder, vice.

The appreciation for 'art' is demanded by your society and forced on you.
It is no different than seeing something, giving it a name, and claiming the glory.
The 'artist' is only making a representation of something already represented and available to our senses or knowledge and then asking for your praise or recognition or money.
We are forced to learn an appreciation for 'art' in every form or we are called 'uncultured'. You learn to find pleasure from experiencing 'art' after appreciation is learned.
It is unnecessary for anything living but culture demands the continual recycling of these ideas in order to ensure it's continuity.

To bring us out of and above our Selves. Imagine being stuck behind a desk all day or dealing with customers. Then you go home and listen to Mozart. Your mind and spirit are on a different level.
