the closer you were to the person, the dressier you should be. just go with your gut and dress nicely, it doesn't have to be depressing black.

Most wakes that I have been to have run the gamut as far as dress is concerned. I have gone from work in a suit. I have seen people in sweaters and chinos. Dresses and skirts. Even jeans(no-no in my op.)

unless you are a family member, you prolly are not going to be there for more than an hour or 2. You dont have to dress up, like a tie for him or a black dress for her. Unless you are coming from work. If you are leaving from home, I would wear "church" clothes. Maybe dress pants, button down long sleeve shirt and a sport coat if you are a man.(sorry, i did not check your profile or avatar) or a nice blouse and skirt if you are a woman.

In the past it was formal black with a black veil for women and men wore hats. Times have changed and now you can pretty much wear what you want. The same is pretty much true for the deceased. No more clutching a lily to ones bosom, etc. The music has also modernized. You wear what your culture expects you to wear whether it be black, white or saffron yellow. Just follow protocol.

Something dark. All black is too much, but darker colors. A plain skirt and conservative top is usually good. A dark suit works too. Avoid anything too showy, like tank tops or bright colors. Conservative is key.... something you might wear to a job interview.

It is traditional to dress in black. Men in suits and women in dresses.

There is less tradition these days and I see people going to wakes wearing anything including jeans and t-shirts.

It does not have to be black, just not too bright. Dress conservatively, like you would at a church.
