No matter how much good is caused by the lie it is still a lie.
Does a good dead balance out a bad?
Truth has more to do with intent then facts or anything else. This said it is not ok to lie. But we still end up lieing, sigh we're working on that one.

Everyone lies at one some time in there life. However, if you are going to lie, you better have an excellent memory. One little slip up and you will not be trusted by people.

If you have a utilitaranism point of view then yes....that is that do something that will benefit the majority of people. I think it is if you are able to hold that lie in your conscience.

A lie of any kind is a type of theft; it 'steals' someones perception of reality and replaces it with the liars. Everyone has a right to evaluate the facts for themselves.

Telling a lie IS NEVER OKAY. It may be a temporary "band aid" for some.....but, eventually it'll hurt someone, or lots in the end. ALWAYS best to tell the truth, in everything that you do in life. You'll sleep better.

Yes. I came to this conclusion because of what happened in Elie Wiesel's book, Night, a memoir about his experiences in Auschwitz as a young boy.

In it a relative of his came up to him and asked if he had heard anything of his wife and children. Elie lied because this man was only alive because he hoped he might someday see them again.

Elie saved this man's life by saying that he had heard from his family, when he had not.

Without context or specifics, I'm leaning toward saying that yes, it is. But it would need to be thought out long and hard, taking all possible ramifications into consideration.

Even though it is considered a sin to lie, I consider it an even bigger sin to hurt someone's feelings. Some lies are necessary!
