I agree that this should be allowed because it is the most natural thing mothers can do for their babies and is also the best option for their development. Any other thoughts on this?

I feel that breast feeding is the best and natural way to go. There are so many nutrients and antibodies that the babies need that are found in the breast milk. I do not understand why people would get so upset over a mother naturally caring for her child. I can understand where a person would not really care to see a breast just hanging out, but that same person can just turn the other direction. Not to mention, most women who breast feed use a a blanket or excuse themselves to the restroom. A few years ago, I heard a story about a women who was cited for indecent exposure because she was breast feeding in her car! How rediculous is that! Anyway, the law would have 100% of my support as it should from everyone else who cares about the welfare of babies.

Why should anyone be offended by the most natural thing in the world? Im breastfeeding my second child and although im not comfortable whipping out my breast just anywhere i will feed my chid when they are hungry. I keep myself covered because i dont want just anyone to be able to see my breasts.
I live in Kentucky and its already a state law making it illegal for anyone to interfere with a nursing mother and the law says that exposing the breast for the purpose of breastfeeding is no longer considered indecent exposure.
There are not many facilities here to accomodate a nursing mother. But I have found several places in the stores that I frequent where i can nurse my baby and not be in the middle of a crowd. Target allows nursing mothers to use a dressing room if they wish.
I dont understand why some people get so offended at a mother feeding her child. Breasts were made for feeding a baby, not to be a sexual object and thats how i view breasts. If i do notice a nursing mother im not going to stare at her because that could be me sitting there. If breastfeeding should be hidden, why not a mother bottle feeding her baby? She is doing the same thing a nursing mother is, feeding her child!

The La Leche Leagues website has a good section on breastfeeding laws across the US. You might want to check it out for further information.

I think it depends on what you consider public really. Sat in a cafe or restaurant is one thing, sitting on a bench in the town centre is perhaps another. Different things upset different people. Having breast fed both of mine I am well aware that it can be done with discretion. I personally wouldnt object but I would imagine quite a few would. Muslims may have a problem as their women are usually covered up. Older people too might feel a little offended. So I guess as long as you are choosy where you do it, it should be up to you. After all it's your babys right to be fed breast milk. One thought though, how would you feel being watched by a group of loudmouth leery teenagers or a dirty old man? Not really clear cut is it?

For those of you in the US - this question relates to the UK where currently women do NOT have any rights to breastfeed in public. And can be thrown out of public places for doing so

But a law is being planned - see links - and I so hope it is passed.
A question to 'nealo d'

Why do so many men seem to equate breastfeeding with shitting when they are completely different functions - as one who obviously feels the same - do men with this attitude equate breasts with something dirty?

Perhaps you should look within yourself and what messages about women's bodies you assimilated as you were growing up?
It seems such a shame that someone who seems educated and says they used to work with mothers and babies can hold such 'stuck' childish view.

No you are certainly not the

' only one who feels uncomfortable at the sight of someone getting their baps out right in front of me while I'm trying to have a cup of coffee'

but it is you who should reassess your attitudes not women who breastfeed

Anyway this attitude leads to women having to breastfeed in a toilet often - which is forcing a baby to have to feed where people **** - this is much more disgusting than any display of a breast could be

I def agree. It is entirely up to the mother whether or not to breastfeed and as such should have the right to do so in public regardless of other narrow-minded people's opinion. Hope the new law goes through.

I was always under the impression that we could breast feed in public!!!I dont think there is such a thing as a law saying we cant!! I always have and itend to with my new arrival too!!
I was once in a cafe and a woman came over and said would it not be better if i breast fed in the loo,I replied "would you eat your lunch in the loo?"
Most women dont just flop them out and do it,most are pretty descreet about it.
Id never heard of it not allowed in public?????
I can appreciate that alot of peolpe get embarrased when they see a woman breast feeding, but why?its pathetic really,i dont stand for negative comments when i do it public!!sorry guys!!!

I am planning on breastfeeding but I am sure that some people don't want to see someone whip their boob out in front of everyone. This is a natural thing and shouldn't be banned. Just a requirement of a little towel or receiving blanket to cover up "things". The reason why this is illegal is because people are too immature to handle this sort of thing. Good point :-).

Can you link us to information on this "new" law? Most (if not all) states have laws already protecting a mothers right to Breastfeed in public.

For consistency's sake, anyone who objects to the tiny amount of boob most women show when breastfeeding should also be offended by women who wear revealing tops! I've seen people object to a women discreetly nursing her baby in public, but be fine with a woman with her boobs gushing out of a tiny tank top.

Society is just messed up; breasts are fine in public as long as they're being used as sex objects, but if they're being used to feed a baby, it's disgusting. I don't get it.

I have no problem with breast feeding in public but I do have a problem with moms that whip out their breast for all to see...cover up discreetly. You are less likely to offend someone then and some people do get embarassed seeing someone nursing so having your boob out is not helping. It is the best option for their development, health wise and bonding with the mom...it's also easy and free to do!
