My family and I are leaving for San Francisco next Tuesday, and never having been there, are not sure what to bring to wear. We've been advised that though the tempuratures often stay around 75 degrees, wind off the water makes it seem much cooler than that. Any suggestions?

Just wear something light - it will be near perfect temperature wise - as it is nearly yearround - you might want to bring alight windbreaker - but I doubt you will need it.

Bear in mind that Mark Twain said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

The days can be lovely and warm, but then the damp fog rolls in and the wind picks up and you're in just your shorts and tank top and you're freezing your patootie off. (We can always tell who the tourists are.) So it's advisable to carry a jacket or sweater with you at all times, especially during the evenings and nights which can be bitter cold --in contrast to the daytime.
A jeans jacket or equivalent is usually sufficient. I usually like to have a shawl (pashmina or the like) too, it's light weight, but warm.

Bring a jacket especially if you are going anywhere on the bay, like Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz or the Embarcadero, sometimes the wind can bring a chill.

That said, San Francisco is a lovely city and can be quite warm too. There is tons to do and I hope you have a wonderful time!

You should dress for cold weather. San Francisco gets really cold. The temperature is actually mostly between 50°F and 70°F . It hardly gets past 70°F, even in the summer, so do not expect the weather to be 75°F. And if you're going anywhere away from Downtown SF or somewhere in the evening and night time, it's going to get even colder due to the strong winds and the fog.

If you do well in the cold, then you don't have much to worry about. Some long sleeved shirts, jeans, and a light jacket would be no problem. But if you don't do so well in cold weather (like me) and you are going to go to places like Ocean Beach (which I live near), Golden Gate Park, or the Presidio, then I advise you to wear a light sweater or a sweater in addition to your long sleeved shirts and jacket. Layers is key. You can always take layers off if you get warm, but if you are cold, there's nothing you can do but move and get your body to warm up.

Hope you enjoy San Francisco.

Bring jeans/pants, short slieve top/shirts, sweaters and most importantly -jackets. I'm not joking - sometimes it gets rather chilly and windy. Like 50 degrees plus cold wind. I advise on wearing jeans not dresses - it's light enough, but you won't freeze if it gets cold. Carry your jacket with you, don't leave it in the hotel. The weather might change from warm to cold in a matter of an hour, or you could get to the other part of the city where the weather is different. SF has the trickiest weather I ever encountered. Rain is unlikely at this time of the year. Nights and evenings are raelly cold.

The downtown and eastern part are about 70 or so unless there is a 3 day heat wave which does occur several times throughout the summer usually towards September. If you go near the bay or ocean you will need a jacket especially at night.

Dress in layers-- lightweight pants are always good, and carry a light jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with you. It's definitely cool pretty much year round in the city. Oh, and wear comfortable shoes if you're going to be walking a lot!

Just piling on here to recommend that you dress in layers. The weather here can vary from hour to hour and block to block.

For example, I left my house this afternoon wearing a light shirt over jeans, and by the time I got downtown I needed my parka.

make sure you bring a light to medium jacket, it may be nice and warm most of the day, or just chilly all day. but you can count on the winds to pick up at about 4pm everyday if not all day, just depends on the weather pattern at the time you visit, but defanately bring a jacket or sweater.
