Most seniors usually have all the household items that they need. While many like sweets, many find themselves on restricted diets due to diabetes and other health problems. The best gift you can give them is the gift of your time. Here are a few ideas for you:

*Consider a subscription or subscription extension to the local Senior newspaper or newsmagazine. Many of these are excellent sources of helpful and practical news and information and many are published by non-profit groups who have tight budgets. Call 1-800-677-1116 to find the name of the Area Agency on Aging serving the county where your friend lives, then call this group to get the name of the group who has a publication that focuses on local seniors' issues.

If your grandma has diminished vision, call your local library and find out if the local senior newspaper is available on tape or CD. If it is, make arrangements to have your friend receive this regularly. Make a contribution to the group who makes this important service possible!

Another idea would be is to find handy gadgets meant to make your grandma's life a little easier. If grandma likes to cook, find measuring cups/spoons that have easy-to-read labels on them. Other cooking tools with larger handles might also be options.

If your grandma likes fresh fruits and vegetables, give a coupon that you make good for a visit to your local Farmer's Market. Then make the trip to the market an outing with your grandma--you can pay for the fresh produce that she selects and enjoy a fun time. (Have someone at the market take a picture of you and grandma at the market and this can be put in a frame as "happy memory!")

Another variation to this idea is to give Grandma a gift of your time by taking a day out of your schedule to take her to the county or state fair. Fairs are fun and she will enjoy spending time with you. Plan to go during the day when it is less crowded and cooler. Take the video camera. I am betting that you will benefit from wonderful memories and some stories that she will share about the "good old days." Anticipating this adventure with you will give her something to look forward to.

If your grandma is not driving any longer, you might consider her needs in this area. If her community has a local transportation service, you might purchase ride vouchers or tickets that she can use. Or you might make "coupons" that are good for a "lift" from you as needs arise.

If grandma likes to write letters to friends, consider giving her a gift of notecards and postage stamps. If she has vision impairments, consider offering to come over for a visit where you will write letters that she dictates to you.

Hope these ideas help! Thanks for caring about your grandma! Best wishes to her and to you!

Write her a poem from the heart. Put a magnet on it for her to hang on the fridge. They like that stuff.
