I always thought that meant that the book is in, but some of the books that I want that say that aren't anywhere to be found.

Next to the status by one of the books, it says "technical services." Does that mean that they have the book somewhere else?

My library confuses me.

My library has different status messages from these, so I'm just guessing as to the probable / possible meanings.

"Received" could mean that the book has been returned to the library, but that it hasn't yet been put back on the shelves.

"Technical services" sounds like the book could be in for repairs or rebinding.

Your best bet would be to ask a librarian at your library just what the different statuses mean.

I work for a library, I can tell you that checked in and recently received pretty much mean checked in. Technical services means it's in our tech department for a particular reason or another. Perhaps they need to change it for some reason or whatever. There's also cataloging, but more than likely if it's in tech services, you won't be able to get it. There's probably something wrong it. Also, just because it says received or checked in, doesn't mean an item is on the shelf. Items often disappear off the shelf just like they do in the grocery store, yes I'm implying they get stolen. It also means they could simply be misplaced. I live in a fairly large town. Sometimes, more than one library has the same book, or we have multiple copies etc. So if one branch can't find it, then we can change it to what we call trace and look for it and hope another branch can find it instead. If you want a book that your library cannot find or does not have, you can ask your library if they can get it for you from another library using a system calling Inter-library loan. Sometimes there is a small fee, usually less than five dollars, sometimes more. Hope all of this helps

If it says, "technical services.", that means the book has arrived at the library, but still needs to be processed before being put on the shelf or sent out to someone who has reserved it.

Some multiple site systems also use that status to indicate a book returned to a different branch then its "home" branch. Then it means it is checked in so it is off the previous borrower's record and it on its way to the branch it belongs to.

"Received" probably means that the book has been delivered to the library by the publisher or the seller of the book. "Technical Services" probably means it is now being processed by technical services, meaning it is having things like its Dewey Decimal number attached and the check-out card pocket attached. Once they are done with it they will put it on the shelf for the patrons to have access to it.

That's what it should mean. I suppose technical services means the book is for the technical services of the library.
Why not ask the librarian what this all means?

It means the book is currently being delivered to a different library, or possibly on the way back to your library.

either that the book was return or the library has it in stock. It depends on the library network program.
