The biggest thing is addiction and trying to fit in with others.

Nicotine is an addictive substance. This is why people who quit smoking cigarrettes "cold turkey" will go through an initial period of withdrawal, including increased cravings. Smokers may initially start smoking because it "mellows them out" but once they start, they will most likely become addicted and can't stop. There are NO health benefits to smoking, if you ask any doctor or consult any medical reference. The tobacco industry would like you to think otherwise though.

Most people start smoking when they are young and feel invinceable. Then by the time they realize they are not stronger(meaning they can't resist the urge) then everyone else they are to hooked to quit without it being a very hard process. Your best bet is to never start.

It's a very difficult addiction to break. Many very rational people have tried many times to quit and cannot. Your body becomes dependent upon the nicotine. You know it's killing you, you have every reason to live, but you do it anyway. I, for one, am glad I never started.

There are no benefits to smoking. People keep lighting up because they are addicted, the same as a drug addict keeps needing that fix of heroin.
