Okay, I'm a huge baseball reader and always interested in what others like. Give me your top 5-10 choices along with a brief reason why - but please, no baseball fiction.

In no particular order...

Ball Four - Jim Bouton - The first book to take some of the fake varnish off ball players and portray them as real people, faults and all. Plus it's fascinating look into the mind of a marginal player struggling to stay in baseball during a time of political and social unrest.

The Historical Baseball Abstract - Bill James - A must own for any serious baseball fan. Filled with interesting ideas, trivia and perspectives. A baseball bible of sorts.

The Summer Game - Roger Angell - Angell's first book of collected essays he wrote about baseball. It's lyrical and touches the emotional nerve of what baseball means to many of us.

The Glory of Their Times - Lawrence Ritter - Conversational in style, it's stories about baseball in the early 20th century by some of the men who played the game at that time. Fascinating and engaging.

You're Missing a Great Game - Whitey Herzog - An autobiography by one of the best (and controversial) managers of the past 50 years. Herzog is opinionated and it shows. He's also very smart and that shows too.

I'm certain once I post this, I'll think of others, but this is a decent list for starters. :-)

1. Perfect. This is the story of all the perfect games.
2. Teammates. The story of the former Red Sox going to visit Teddy Ballgame one last time before he went to the big freezer in the sky! About a year after this came out I met Dom Dimiaggio and sat and talked with him for about five hours, great guy!
3. The Ty Cobb Story. While he was a bigot and a real SOB he was also one of the greatest of all time and reading this book you realize what made him tick a little more. His family was hard as nails as well.
4. YOGI!!! The story of Yogi Berra, he was an amazing catcher with very little gifted ability...plus all the Yogisms make it all worth it.
5. Baseball's Other All-Stars: This is the story of all the groups excluded for so long, the ***** Leagues the Cuban Winter Leagues... I just read it and it made me think about how many amazing players we will never really now about because they did not get the same opportunity that they would have been afforded today.

That is my list but I am not sure what order it would be...probably Teammates first!

my prison without bars by pete rose
if you are the type that thinks pete rose should burn in hell for betting on baseball, then you wont like it, but i enjoyed reading his views on one of the most controversial baseball questions.

im a white sox fan so if you are not, maybe you wont like this but "8 men out." its about the 1919 black sox scandal when the white sox blew the world series on purpose to get money.

i have never read moneyball, but it was on the top sellers list for a long time. something to do with how the money works at a team, in this case, the oakland A's
