I have started keeping track of my periods; I'm trying to identify a pattern. I suspect that they are irregular, but in order to know for sure I need to note them, of course. My question is this: how do you count how many days your period lasts? If it starts on Monday and ends Thursday, do you count Monday and end on Thursday (and thus it would be 4 days), or do you start counting the next full day, which would be Tuesday, and stop at Thursday, which would be 3 days?
Also, if I want to know how long my cycle is, do I start with the first day or the last day of my period?

Homeless_Hector ... believe it or not, they do not teach this stuff in health class. Maybe they did, but I'm 21 years old, so it's been a while. As for counting, I'm terrible at math, so go figure. The education system certainly is inefficient; I found that out during my first day of college (only 1 year left!)

On a calendar, put a red "P" on the first day of your period, then every day until it's over. For your scenario, it was a 4 day period, starting Monday and ending Thursday. You count your cycle by noting the length between the first day of each of your periods. So, if you start on July 1, then your next period starts July 28, you have a 28 day cycle.

Many women have irregular periods, by the way. It's not uncommon in the least. If you want to regulate your period, get on the birth control pill. I had no idea when I was going to start before I got on it and now I could tell you right down to the hour almost.

The first day you bleed, even if it starts in the evening or just spotty, if your "first" day. You then will count not only the number of days your period lasts, but also the number of days till your NEXT period. This will tell you how long your cycle is, and will help you to determine if you're regular or not.

Most women will have a 28 day cycle (from the first bleed day till the last day before bleeding again is 28 days), whereas some women will go 40 days, others 20 days, etc. If you cannot establish a pattern within 1 day (so that it ranges only from say 27-29 days) THEN you're irregular. The length of the period itself is not necessarily important.

A menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. Day 13, 14, or 15 you ovulate usually. You count a day that you bleed for the whole day no matter the day of the week as one day it isn't like Paris Hilton's special credit for coming to jail at 11pm and getting credit for a day because the day changed while she was there. So if you start Monday and end Thursday that is a four day period. To calculate your cycle start with the first day of your period until the next month's first day of your period. It may give or take one or two days as well by the way.

Well, let me put it this way... when you count to ten, do you start with 1 and end with 10? Of course, when some people count to 2000 they start with zero... and then they think the 20th century ended when 1999 ended. I'm still puzzled how anyone could have believed that two thousand years had ended when the calendar hadn't even said 2000 yet. Of course, I guess some people are two years old on their first birthday. What still irks me, is that they were in the majority and got to celebrate the end of the millenium a year early, and those of us who knew better didn't get to celebrate the actual millenium at all. What I'm saying dearie, is that you are the victim of an education system that has failed you completely.

Monday through Thursday would be 4 days.

Start the cycle on the first day your period begins until the first day of the next period begins.

Begin counting from when you see the first spots or when you see any blood at all large amounts or small- and that would be your first day. The last day is the last day you see any blood (large or small). Women usually menstruate for 4 days. (I am not that lucky- I go for 7 by clockwork). In around the 14th day is when your egg releases and you are extremely fertile. After that, the sac begins to break down and then eventually another period discards the egg. Hope this helps!
Take care.
