You definitely can lose weight without losing muscle. Many exercises are designed to tone the body and build muscle. If you were to exercise on an empty stomach, there is a great possibility of losing muscle, because of the lack of energy from food that your body needs.

The key to not losing muscle when you are doing cardio to burn fat is all in the nutrition. Eating right (and eating enough) is just as important in muscle building and fat loss as working out regularly. Skipping meals and starving yourself is the fastest way to lose muscle.

If you aren't eating enough carbs and protein after your workout your body actually will start to break down its own muscle to use as energy - so your just spinning your wheels so to speak, with no visible results. If your working out hard don't be afraid to feed your muscles the energy they need!

Personally, I was doing 30 min of cardio 4x a week for months, but I wasn't able to burn off my last stubborn 10 lbs of body fat until I upped my caloric intake from 1800 to 2400 and started lifting 3x a week.

Of course! Losing body fat has nothing to do with muscle--in fact if you lift weights as part of your workout to lose fat, you might gain muscle mass!

Yes of course you can- just as long as you are excersising. You can't lose muscle unless you are starving you body.. then the body will need to find nutrients and start attacking the muscle. Eat right and excersise plenty. :)
