Away - you know your going to away from the computer so you turn on your away message.

Idle - if you don't touch the keyboard for awhile, AIM goes idle so people who have you on their buddy list can tell that your not at the computer. Idle happens automatically. Away you have to turn on.

Away means they have put an away message up that they are doing something. Idle means they haven't been at their computer for 20 minutes.
