I've had lots of guinea pigs. They are cute and fun for a while, but I ended up giving all mine away. They smell and they make a very loud and annoying whining sounds all day and night, to the point that extended family didn't want to sleep at my place when they came to visit because they would be kept awake. I now have a bunny and they are a much better choice for a pet, and about the same amount of effort.

Guinea pigs don't smell unless you aren't taking care of them properly.
Guinea pigs are wonderful, if you have the resources to care for them. They aren't disposable pets. They require time, money, and space. Vet bills are a reality and need to be factored in to your decision.
Store bought cages are not big enough for guinea pigs. You need to buy or build a C&C cage. They are cheaper and bigger for your piggie. www.guinespigcages.com you can order a premade one or learn how to make your own. Preference of bedding varies. Some people swear by carefresh. I hate it. I find it dusty and it aggrevates my pig's breathing. I prefere fleece or aspen chips (no oils or aroma, perfectly safe). Do not use cedar chips!
A good diet is essential. Quality pellets (oxbow is a good one), daily vegetables, vitamin C supplements, and unlimited hay are all neccessary. http://guinealynx.info/diet.html... will give you the exact diet you need for a healty guinea pig.
** Vitmain C should not be put in their water. It weakens the vitamin, changes the taste of the water, and you can't measure how much vit. c is actually taken by each pig.
Guinea pigs need daily floor/exercise time in a safe environment. Even the biggest cage aren't big enough for good exercise.
2 pigs are better than 1. They are social animals. Be sure they are the same sex or nuetered.

It sounds like a lot, but it's all about being responsible! My pigs are the highlight of my days. They greet me when I come in from work. I love watching them running around during floor time!

You need a lot of space to give them a decent cage. Also, they learn to squeak for food and then you can't walk by without them all squeaking for food and they're so damn cute that you have to go get them something.

But on the up side they are so cute and you don't have to walk them. Their poop comes out like dry pills so it doesn't really matter if they **** on you because they're not runny or wet or anything. They're just great, too. I love my guinea pigs so much

Pros- love to sit on lap, great to talk to when you are down, adorable, hilarious antics, not super long lifespan, longer than a hamster/gerbil/mouse, relativly inexpensive

Cons- not always eager to be handled, you need 2 to keep them happy,

They are disgusting little creatures who smell and make that annoying sound all day long. The whole idea is a con to me...ugh.

Con: they stink - the cedar chips and piss and **** really stink. they run around and flip all this 'stink' out of the cage and then they dog goes and eats it.

there are no pros, unless you're a five-year-old that's easliy entertained.

Pros: they are cute.

Cons: cleaning out the cage, paying for food, cleaning out the cage, keeping them healthy, cleaning out the cage, buying toys and medicine and the litter for the bottom, cleaning out the cage, keeping the cage from smelling.

Pro:
Easy to handle without getting bit
Usually friendly and let you pet them.
Semi easy to catch if you let it out in your house to play.
Con:
Nocturnal, so they squeal at night, so I wouldn't suggest keeping in your bedroom.

Their hams are very small, hardly a mouth full.
