Hey Leah, dry land sucks!!! However, it may be an integral part of your training. You sound like you need ot work your endurance. The longevity of the activity is a lot more important than the intensity at this point. The longer you run at a medium pace the better you will feel while running harder over shorter distances.

If you cramp up, slow down and breathe deeply. You are pushing too hard. You should not cstop completely, just bring it down to a more manageable level. Control your breathing and wait until it subsides a bit. It does not have to go away entirely but you should not kick it up a notch when you get a cramp, that won't help.

Talk to your coach about your running endurance. Tell him/her how you are feeling and that you want to get better. Ask if they can help you by giving workouts aimed at endurance, not just running fast.

Just think, all that dryland is just molding you into a future triathlete!!! ( =

I do dry land, too. Cramps can be a result of not getting enough minerals to sustain the body during the high periods of intense exercise. Try this powder, Emergen-C (no, not a drug). It is poured into the water and gives the water a gatorade like taste with enough minerals for us swimmers. Or eat bananas and fruit for potassium. Hope this helps.

After a while, the pain will lessen with each dryland time.
