Brilliant question! I had a kitchen fitted some time ago and consequently I have lots of 'spares' in my garage which the fitters left here. I can't go in a shop and buy 1 tap washer but have to buy a pack of six and either throw the others away or store them. Same with screws, curtain rail fittings etc., etc. When I buy shoes now they invariably come complete with a spare set of heels, which I find are the wrong size when the shoes are due for repair. We are being told to do all we can to save the planet so why isn't a lot of wastefulness being tackled at 'source' - ie., the manufacturers? And who on earth wants the junk mail which is inserted in Newspapers? Why aren't the companies responsible either stopped from doing it or made to pay a hefty fine?

Probably. People jump before planning. They don't find out what they actually need or how much effort will be needed to complete the job.
