I will be inheriting a 1977 harley sportster from my uncle who passed. I have never owned a harley as I have only owned sports bikes, and I am having trouble finding information on this bike. Anyone know of good websites with info and parts for this bike. I would like to replace certain pieces that have rust and what not on them. Any info on this bike would be helpful
Thanks

Is this a good bike? How would you rate it overall? I would like to make it really nice (has been sitting a long time, but runs great) Does this bike have any value? I do not want to put too much into it if it is only worth 500 bucks. I could just use it as is. Thanks again

I am not going to sell it because I would like to keep it in the family.

they do hold their value, how much depends which model it is. there should be a tag on the neck(xlh, xlch, xls)I'm not sure when xlx came outbut those are rare,or if its a caferacer. you are going to have rust on some parts because it has cast iron parts (ironhead). JandPcycles, custom crome, and several others have replacement parts. set up right it will keep up with most sport bikes. A good one can be worth over 4500

? Old anything is worth what it's worth to YOU. The nye- sayers don't believe in family ties and memories. How close were you and your uncle? Do you have any 'special memories' of him and his scoot?
Let me tell you a story. Back in 1968 my father let me ride his FLH. He had that bike when he passed on fifteen years ago. I have it now. The thing isn't worth what I've got into it, BUT the sentimental and intrinsic valve are what matters to me. My oldest son's first motorcycle was 1973 XLCH. That was the first year of the 1,000cc Sportster. I bought it from his as he was shipping out with his Marine Corp unit during Desert Shield/Storm era. I still maintain his scooter, the way he did and ride it on occassions. Then I have the first bike and fourth bike I bought, both are AMF Harley-Davidsons. The first was an SX-175 two stroke, the 1977 FXE Super Glide. Bikes #2 & 3 have been lost, one was totalled with me on it (1970 Triumph Daytona) the other stolen (1971 Tri-
umph Bonneville) and never recovered.
So you see, it's what you place as value in your life. Look at the number of people that build their custom cars, they will never get out what they have put into them, but they enjoy them anyways for as long as they can. They add this or that as time and money permit and rarely regret doing so.
Think about, it's you choice and you passion.

My first bike was a 1976 XLCH Sportster and it was a fun bike. However, with that said, your bike is from the AMF years and has no nostalgic value. Based on current prices for new Sportsters, I wouldn't expect it to be worth very much. Maybe a $1000 or so to someone who wants an old one depending on condition. I wouldn't put a whole lot of money into it for cosmetics. Personally, I would ride the crap out of it for a year or two and then sell it for something better.

Your sporty is a 1000cc pre evolution engine. One good thing about Harley is there are always parts available through your local dealer. Another good thing about Harley is it rhymes with barley. MORE.....The bike handles well and has good torque. It has value because it makes noise that is the main consideration to some prospective bikers. It's worth $500 apart in a basket. You say it runs good. Could be worth $2000. Looking good takes it back up to what it cost new. I'd advise you to sell it. It'll keep you broke trying to keep it running good.
