It can still be true labor. Usually, the shorter ones are in preparation for the longer ones, but it could just be the natural way your body does things. If they don't go away, or seem to be getting closer together, even if they don't lengthen, call your midwife. I would suggest that you get checked, just to be sure. You never know what your body will do while in labor!!
One thing to try is to walk, walk, walk. Try walking through the contractions. If you can't walk or talk through them, they are real contractions. Also, if changing position or walking makes them stop, they aren't real labor contractions. They may be practice ones, but the real ones won't go away with walking or even changing positions.

Just keep track of them and if they get stronger and last longer, you should get to the hospital. How far along are you? Your midwife was right about contractions usually lasting 30-60 sec. but remember that is USUALLY! Which means, every woman is different and their bodies react different than each other and even different during each pregnancy! Everything was different during my two pregnancies. With my son, I ate everything, felt really good (even at the end when I developed Toxemia), but had a long delivery (15hours)! With my daughter, I couldn't eat hardly anything, the smell of everything made me sick, I was miserable during most of the pregnancy, but when it came time to deliver her, she sort of just "fell" out! It only took 5 hours of labor and the pain was much less painful! With my first I had Demoral and an Epidural. With my daughter I didn't have anything! My cousin just had a baby and her contractions didn't last very long at all and she didn't even have real strong ones. The dr. thought she still had a ways to go and she had the baby within 2 hours of labor! (No fair, huh!?!) Trust your body and YOUR own feelings! Nobody knows how you are feeling, but yourself. You'd rather make a wasted trip to the hospital than to wait to long and end up having a homebirth! Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you! Congratulations!

Okay sweetie... Enough is enough.. You need some confidence here... Emotional signposts, as opposed to timing them.. These will probably be perfect for you!
Here we go...
1. Contractions start, and you think YIPPEE! You go around the house, making sure your bags are packed, maybe call your friends, hop on answers and mess around.. You can talk through them just fine, and they may hurt, but they are not yet serious...
2. They start to get maybe a bit longer, but your attitude has changed..You are more withdrawn, and dont take things lightly. If your hubby were to make a joke, you may not laugh...You want to just go lay down, and have quiet..You need to concentrate on the contractions, and you probably dont feel like talking through them... This would be active labor...
3. You are really having to work through them.. They are more intense, and painful... You hit the "I CANT DO THIS ANYMORE" stage...You may cuss, swear you will never again have children, any every thing annoys you, unless done specifically the way you want it.. This is transition. You are about an hour away from pushing that baby out, and that is the best feeling in the world!
Now, with my third, I did not know these signposts, and they were painful as could be, but they were ten minutes apart.. I was on the phone with the midwife, told her to hang on, I went through a contraction, talking myself through it.. When it was done, I picked the phone up again and finished talking with her.. She asked me if I had just had one, I said yes, and she said I had better get to the hospital... Even though they were ten minutes apart, they were about 45 secs apart, and painful enough that I could not talk through them... It took me about an hour to get to the hospital, and my son was born 45 minutes later..Best birth EVER!
Good luck!

Listen, trust your instinct. Everyone told me that when I couldn't walk and they were longer blah blah blah, that then they were real. Well I am here to tell you that my contractions were coming 5 minutes apart for an hour and didn't hurt that bad and didn't last very long. I went to the hospital to be monitored (and I hear them saying they are sending me home in about an hour) I told them...NOPE this baby is coming. Sure enough 10 hours later I was being moved to my room WITH a little baby boy. You know your body. If you feel like this is it...get to the hospital when they get close enough and if they keep up. At the very least they will monitor and send you home. =) good luck!

You could be in an early stage of labor. The further into labor you get, the longer (and closer together) they get. Try to relax and make sure you have plenty of gas and have everything you're going to need for the hospital packed. Once they start lasting a little longer and are about 3-5 minutes apart they'll most likely have you head to the hospital. Good luck!!!

when there 5 Min's a part and lasting a min then that's when its time to call the midwife and get to the hospital
try not to worry it will soon be over and you will have your baby in your arms
good luck xx

It sounds like early labor to me. Occasionally, the contractions do not get very long. With my second one, I was waiting for the contractions to get longer. They were only about 30-45 seconds long. She was born in the car! My contractions never got longer.

I was to take a bath w/ my first, either it will calm them down or speed them up, I thought I was one night so I took 2 tylenol and took a bath they went away and 2 days later they came back didn't take the tylenol just the bath and I could barely get out the tub! I called and said I was on my way. And yes you wouldn't be typing! You wouldn't be moving!
