I started by only putting it on the top lid, on the outer half.

There are different types of eyeliner. There's pencil, and there's liquid. Pencil is good for smudging to create a natural effect, whereas the liquid is for looking more dramatic than usual.
When applying eyeliner, it's important not to smudge it (especially if using liquid eyeliner). If you smudge it while you're drawing a line, you'll have to start all over again.
The best way to apply eyeliner is to get the corner of your eye (the corner furthest away from your nose), and gently stretch it so your eyelid stretches out far, then start to draw the line. Don't draw too hard. If you're using pencil eyeliner, do bits at a time, don't draw a massive line. With liquid eyeliner, do tiny, tiny lines: if you do big lines, it's likely you'll run out easily and have to do the end of the line, which can be tricky to put right.
That woman in that picture also has lots and lots of mascara on, so her lashes look longer.
The best thing to remember is, if you want a 'smoky' effect for your eyes, use pencil eyeliner. With liquid eyeliner, you can't smudge it afterwards because it goes everywhere, but with pencil eyeliner you can smudge it any way you like without it being messy.
And another thing - liquid eyeliner & lots of mascara = massive no-no!

the lady in the pic didnt use liner. the line is created by the mascara. anyway. u have to use a thin sharp pencil esp 4 the lower part coz this can get really messy if the pencil is not sharp enuff. follow the lash line as close as u can. this will look nice and natural

just put a thin line along ur lash line and that will look fine. i would recommend using a pencil, not the liquid kind.

do not use black, use brown and a very thin thin line only
