The political spectrum is not flat or two dimensional. The best way to visualize it is as a ribbon or strip of paper that actually wraps around. At the very extremes of the right and left they are very similar, you could say that they "touch". This helps to explain why Stalinism and Nazism looked so similar as totalitarian states.
Nazi means national socialism. It in actually is kind of a hodgepodge of ideologies. These include: militarism, ethnic nationalism, some collectivism, anti-semitism, and eugenics.
Both the mainstream Liberal and Conservative are very far off from Nazism, this is important to remember, but Nazism can be said to fall more on the Right or Conservative side than the Left or Liberal side.

American Liberals are Left-Wing, while American Conservatives are Right-Wing.
Nazism is Radical Right-Wing and closest to American Conservatism because it is Right-Wing, even though every American Conservative is not a Nazi.
So the Conservative is closer to Nazism.

On a political scale, Nazism is on the far, far right, way past Conservatism. But, Nazism is closer to Conservatism than Liberalism.

Liberals and Nazi's have a great number of similarities. Socialized medicine, Big Government, Economic Redistribution, Civilian Disarmament, Theological removal/replacement, Social Engineering.
While conservatism has ALWAYS maintained a platform of minimized government.

I think the average everyday liberal or conservative is closest to regular people. You can hang out with them toss back a beer and have a pretty good time. It's the more rabid, extreme ends of the party that tend toward being the true nazis. They see no reason. Their point of view is the only point of view and must win uber alles. Look down the board. If you see just one word answers or one where the person needs to make a point of baiting the other side, then you have found your nazis.

Technically the conservatives are closer to Naziism, but if you go far enough out on either wing, you find totalitarianism. Conservative totalitarianism in Germany, and Liberal Totalitarianism in the USSR. They eventually look the same either way.
Truth of the matter is, we need to stop defining what is liberal and what is conservative and start defining by what promotes social and economic justice and what does not.

technically, nazism is on the right side of the spectrum but a regime like Stalin, hardcore communism, is the extreme left. the balance in the US is in the middle. US liberals and conservatives are generally moderate.

Neither. Naziism was a very unique system.
Conservatives would be closer to Fascism, and liberals closer to communism, if you pushed either to it's far extreme.
