Garter snakes make great pets, but keeping a wild one may be a bad idea--the wild ones can be snappy, and it could have parasites. It could also be injured from the encounter with your cat. If you decide to keep it, or if you buy one from a pet store (the better option), it will need a glass aquarium with a SECURE lid--garters are escape artists. Keep in mind that they can grow to about 3 feet in length, and as adults they can be pretty mean if not tamed (some wild ones will never tame down). If it's a young snake (under 18 inches or so), it will be fine to use a 10-gal for now, but plan to invest in a 20-gal long tank when it grows. They can be picky eaters, and some will never take to mice, which can make them difficult to keep. They will readily take feeder goldfish, guppies, and bait minnows, but should not be fed solely on fish--they also need worms and frogs, or at the very least pinky-hopper mice. The tank should have a water bowl large enough for the snake to soak in, a climbing stick, a place to hide, and a heat pad and/or heat lamp. Here's a helpful website, too: http://www.anapsid.org/gartcare.html

Thisismynewage nailed it. However as far as them being agressive, I caught so many of them as a kid and kept a few for years. Some I caught in the fall and my at the time 12 year old brain thought they shouldn't be put back because it is too cold. However now I know more about reproductive cycles and brumation.
Anyway, I fed mine worms and minnows from a baitshop. They generally didn't take the minnows much. Big worms were their meal of choice. Only the really really big ones I caught ever tried taking a mouse (which is interesting as they don't constrict)
I just realized I went way off where I was going. Aggression. They tame down pretty easy. Some gentle handling will do it. When you catch one you are almost guarunteed to get musked on. It isn't pretty smelling and you are best to hold the snake away from you when you catch it as you know it is coming. It -may- try to bite, and so what if it does. Only the bigger ones can barely even break your skin. It will freak you out a bit but it isn't going to hurt or leave a mark (if it is a big one you may get a row of VERY small red marks/scabs that flake off in a day or so. So go into the bathroom or outside, take out your new friend, hold it away from you and be gentle and give it lots of body support. In no time it will be fine. If you really want to, wear some gardening or work gloves (no garters teeth are big enough to go through them) and have a few handling sessions. You will be pals soon enough.

if you mean garter snake, feed it some small goldfish in a large bowl. keep it at about 75 -80 degrees during the day and about 68 at night. you should do a search on the internet and check out different web sites. if you don't mean garter snake, i don't know what to feed it or how warm it should be. good luck.

I would keep it in a fish tank...without water in it...and a top on it so the cat can't get in or the snake get out, and put some holes in the top so the snake can get some air. I don't know what they eat but they probably like insects, maybe there's a pet store that could help you out.
