Its my belief that parents have the obligation to teach their children their values, be it religious values, conservatives values, or even liberal values.

But liberals for some reason seem to call it brainwashing, and all sorts of other silly names.

So why shouldn't parents teach their children the values that they hold?

This is my source, of course I am making a sweeping generalization. But if that bothers you let me clarify. There is a liberal wing that believes parents shouldn't teach their children from what I have heard from questions on here.

Wow, I must say I didn't expect to get so many attacks on my question. From what I have observed I think there is an element of truth in it. I'll try to phrase it better next time.

because children need to be taught to think for themselves. Help them to grow to be strong independent thinkers. There world is not going to be the same for them as it was for their parents, so your values may be passe' and not helpful to deal with their lives productively. Let them choose how they wish believe.

Let's just put a moratorium on child birth.

We HAVE taught our child our core values, and he matured to be a son any person - lib or con - would be proud of.

He believes in HARD WORK. He graduated 3rd in his class and went on to become a Master Electrician, then started his own business from scratch, and paid off all the loans within a few years. He established his reputation as a quality craftsman.

He believes in LIVE AND LET LIVE. He is a gun owner (which should please the cons), but the majority of those weapons are used for hunting; not "personal protection." At the same time, he matured to be a professional musician, believing that song lyrics should not be labeled or censored.

He believes in BENEVOLENCE toward those who have less than he does; donating time, money and goods to local charities.

He does not DISCRIMINATE toward those with a different lifestyle.

He probably voted for Bush (I never asked him) and he's also an atheist. Go figure.

Everyone doesn't fit into a nice, convenient mold; politically, philosophically, or spiritually.

As a liberal who is interested in having kids some day I will tell you what values I would focus on.

Mainly those regarding empathy and responsibility.
Things that would fall under this are:
Environmental responsibility
Education - including comprehensive sex ed
Respect for others, including different skin color, heritage, sexual orientation, language and religion
The importance of family- through lots of family time and limiting TV
Charity- helping those less fortunate
Speech- perhaps by involving them in discussing politics and attending a protest or council meeting

that's mainly all for now. sounds pretty horrible, eh? ;)

You're really going to have to show me your source.

I'd love it if more parents would take an interest in their children. Unfortunately, part of the reason teachers are so powerless these days is because most parents think their precious little spawn can do no wrong.

Kid pulls a knife on a teacher? The teacher should show the kid more respect!

Kid mouths off to a teacher? The teacher better not say anything back, or WATCH OUT when Mommy and Daddy find out!

It's insane.

Most people in this country don't know how to teach their children respect, much less morality.

Pretty much the worst argument I have seen on here in a while. The most ridiculous thing I have ever read. From my experience liberal parents end up having smarter children that exceed on their own much more so than the over protective conservative children that can't pee without their parents help. Totally absurd argument.

By definition liberals believe in letting parents teach their children what they want but conservatives try to force their ideology on everyone else.

That's a very broad and inaccurate generalization.

By all means, teach your children values at home, and KEEP IT IN THE HOME. Don't force feed views and values to everyone else's kids by requiring prayer in school, and claiming intelligent design is science rather than theology.

Unfortunately Conservative view include a lot of Hate views.

The Radical Right preaches about denying many of our fellow people rights.

Not suprisingly the cancer of conservatism should be eradicated

Uh, I think you have a misconception.

Most people don't want OTHER people giving their children their values. People teach their children their own values. Some people see it as brainwashing, but when a child grows up they are more open to ideas and can form their own views. Me for example, was raised Catholic, but as I grew up my views changed.

i'm a liberal, and a Christian. I even have raised my toddlers to love themselves and each and each-different, to stay as human beings of fee and distinctive characteristic and to realize that each and absolutely everyone human beings, which incorporate themselves, fall wanting perfection and place self belief in the grace and forgiveness of others. all of us make blunders and we are all interior the technique of "transforming into". My toddlers have consistently respected me and that they have got consistently completed their appropriate to cooperate with me. we've consistently been a precise kinfolk, and we communicate approximately something and each little thing. i'm in desire of corporal punishment while there is an particularly good explanation for it, yet i've got basically ever had to hotel to that two times in 18 years, and the two situations grow to be to avert my toddlers from stepping into circumstances that had the means to harm them irreparably. i think that if a parent is consistent and loving, corporal punishment will infrequently if ever be required. I even have raised my toddlers to place God first of their lives, and to love others as God loves them. I even have taught them that textile fulfillment is fading and that genuine fulfillment is a controversy of the coronary heart and the spirit. I even have taught them to look for what's authentic, selflessly and uncompromisingly.... yet to fulfill human beings the place they are, as God meets us the place we are.

ah nickolassc, finally showing your true colors and resorting to dubious claims and outright dishonesty aye? If this is any example of your values, i bet more people than just libs would object to you teaching them to children.
political views aren't values, they are entirely two separate things.
I learned values of my parents, and more, fortunately i didn't inherit their political views. I learned my values from Boyscouts of America, and from one Bible verse that stuck with me more than anything that my parents have ever said:
Do unto other, as you would have them do unto you.
Mathew 7:12
