It really depends on the individual. Some primates will peel open the fruit, others will eat the entire thing, peel and all... even others will bite it open and scoop out the middle.

I have even seen some that will remove the peel and eat the fruit only for another primate to come along and eat the peel they left behind.

Some like the taste, some do not. As to how they learned it, the same way you or I learned about the food that we do or do not like.

It is a preference thing. I work in an ape sanctuary and every morning they get a banana with their breakfast. Some of them love to eat the peel, some of them do not. Those that don't like to eat the peel usually peel theirs in a way very much like humans, which is to grab the stem end and bend it back and down. Once that first strip is off, though, they usually just take the rest off in one piece though some do it in two or three pieces.

As far as peanuts, it is just a matter of curiosity. Give a primate something it has never had before and it is going to examine it and play with it and one of the first things they will try to ascertain is whether or not it is edible in any way. Sort of like young humans...they put everything in their mouth.

Because whilst some behaviours are learnt others are inherited. Monkeys live in social groups and learn from each other so when a baby sees the mom or anothr monkey peel the banana he learns from them that in order to get the food he has to peel. It's the same with human babies they learn from their parents or siblings.

Monkeys (chimpanzees) often eat the banana, peel and all. Being intelligent and curious creatures they have figured out all sorts of ways to get at food.
Bears, blue jays and squirrels have all figured out ways to get at elusive foods.

monkeys don't eat bananas the same way we humans do....ie peel and eat from top. They peel them and eat them from the side. The flavor is stronger if you eat them this way.Try it the next time you buy some..see what I mean.
