I've done that a couple of times too. Nothing ever happened so I don't think you have to worry.

valve covers won't rust, because of the oil on them, should only lost around a quart so no just check the oil, replace what splashed out and put the cap on you should be fine

no unless you lost alot of oil
i'm sure its a mess under the hood though

my friend did it and the engine was COVERED with oil...it lost 2 qts....smoke everywhere.
