thanks for your responses so far. I just wondered about life changing events such as death or illness, does this suddenly help bring about a change in a Narcissistic person? If so what is likely to happen from people's experiences

i think once you are in your 50's you are sorta set in your ways. unless a major life changing even happens, chances are slim

I was married to a Narcissist for 10 years. We had been through some life changing events and he would try to change for a time but it never lasted. I believe true narcissism is a personality "trait", I would rather saw flaw. I am not so sure it can change without treatment and what narcissist would believe they need help ? Mine was actually diagnosed with it and came to believe that it was who he was naturally and no amount of therapy would change him. So, obviously, there was no point in him scheduling any appointments because he already believed it wouldn't help and no he didn't want to change. He liked the rush of adrenalin of himself and any and all attention he received especially from women. He totally drained me emotionally because there was no way I was able to satisfy all of his narcissitic needs. Someone else has him now, God bless her

Be careful as narcissism runs in deep waters as the old saying goes. Often people do change and mellow out as they get older, but also there's a good chance the narcissist will become bitter and so therefore all the way around is not a good scenario to be part of. Good Luck!

People can change at any point throughout their lives...we just can't change them. I'd like to think its possible, though narcissists are notorious for justifying all their actions and only giving when its necessary to make them look good, then taking back to hurt and bring your down lower. So be careful.

The only way a person with Narcissm can change is if they understand that without GOD Himself taking over, they are in a position of loosing Heaven when they die.

I don't believe they can. Yhey can give a good impression of having changed but always there is the secret world which has to be fed.

my ex was in his 50's, but he didn't change he got worse. his narcissistic ways eventually destroyed the marriage. i do not think people change, i think people are who they are, they may mask behaviors for a while but eventually their true self comes out.

Narcissism is a psychological condition. Its who that person is. They might mellow a bit in old age but their underlying personality will still be the same.
