Oh man, now there's a touchy subject. I sold engagement rings for many years. I'm a romantic at heart, so when these girls walk in saying that their man had better buy at least a one carat ring for an engagement ring, my heart broke for the boy I had never met. However, many more girls/women are starting to be about size first, then later they care about the quality. It really depends on the girl. The easiest would be to walk past a jewelry store and say that you were thinking about picking up a nice but inexpesive pearl necklace for your mom for mother's day. Then let her lead you around the store to the different cases. Tell the salesperson that you're just looking for now. If your girl is hopeful, than she should gaze at the rings in the engagement section. You can then ask her what a certain shape is, let her or the salesperson tell you. Then she'll probably follow up with which shape she likes. The shape of the stone can be just as important as the size or quality to a woman. Tiffany's is overpriced, but some girls do like name brands. So really just see how she reacts to the rings in the engagement section. Look at something for your mom. Ask if they have a sales flyer, then get out and distract her with food or some other errand. By all means, so search online for best prices also. Depending on the size of ring stone you buy, depends on whether it automatically comes with a certification. You might have to have an appraisal done otherwise after you purchase it if needed. Your choice. Hope this helps you somewhat. Feel free to email me below if you have other jewelry questions that I may be able to help clarify for you.

ahh the dilemna of a man...my fiance did exactly that. he got me a an awesome quality 1c diamond and a beautiful setting to match (3 round stones on each side of the center cut, tapered down the band). my ring sparkles even when it's dirty, something an "ok" 2c diamond will not do. now how good does a non-sparkly 2c diamond look? never very i assume. you give 2 very specific diamonds...any chance you can meet somewhere in the middle? 1.5c perhaps? go to bluenile.com and you can play with the different 4 c's of a diamond and it gives prices for each size/quality. how big is her hand? small hands look great w 1c but larger fingers may need a more substantial stone. and lastly...take her feelings into consideration. if she's happy w 1c, run with it. if her family/friends gawk at the sight of a 1c diamond (which they won't bc it'll blind them, lol) maybe they shouldn't hang around to see it. in the end, your fiance will be happy with the diamond you chose for her b/c it's something YOU chose for HER, not for everyone else's unwarranted opinions.

A 1k diamond is nothing to sneeze at! As a matter of fact, mine is a beautiful 1k round high quality solitaire. If she told you that she would rather have quality than quantity, I'd beleive her. If her family ewwwwwwwws over a 1k diamond, you may have much more to worry about than the size of her ring!! Good luck to ya!

Genuinely I would rather have a smaller better quality diamond. Even better I would rather have a guy who loved me enough to ask this question on Yahoo for me, so sweet :)

Yeah, both my husbands insisted on the large rock...frankly, its embarasshing when someone goes, oooooo how do you hold your hand up with that thing on it. Or whatever equally annoying questions.
I'd prefer thoughtfulness (like something w/o a diamond, but that would be special to me or us in some way) and quality.

Size does not matter, it is the love that the two share together that matters, If your girlfriend wants a bigger diamond, jmo, but it sounds just a little bit selfish to me, unless you do not mind giving her what she wants, and if you do, then you will be giving her what she wants your whole married life!
JMO, but the size of a diamond does not measure up to the size of love two people share together!

OMG definitely the smaller better one! without question!
bigger diamonds can look kind of tacky sometimes, like you're showing off. the small, perfectly cut one will be amazing! like a little fairy light! sweet!
