Death is a moment.

What's worth than death?
Pain. Pain is worse than death. Death is simply a yes or no question, a door that's either open or shut. Pain, however, is terrifying and can last a long, long time.

I suppose torture would have to be the ultimate pain, pain delivered by a professional, trained in such things, trained to keep you alive and conscious for it.

Worse tortures:

bamboo shoots under the fingernails

sticking a red-hot wire up someone's urethra

chinese water torture

And then what happens when we must watch a loved one endure these tortures for our own torment. What if someone tied down your husband/wife/mother/father/child and ripped their finger and toenails off one by one.

i'd say those are some things worse than death. Death is really quite simple, and over in a flash.

LI
The first and most necessary topic in philosophy is the practical application of principles, as, We ought not to lie; the second is that of demonstrations as, why it is that we ought not to lie; the third, that which gives strength and logical connection to the other two, as Why this is a demonstration. For what is demonstration? What is a consequence? What a contradiction? What truth? What falsehood? The third point is then necessary on account of the second and the second on account of the first. But the most necessary, and that whereon we ought to rest, is the first. But we do just the contrary. For we spend all our time on the third point and employ all our diligence about that, and entirely neglect the first. Therefore, at the same time that we lie, we are very ready to show how it is demonstrated that lying is wrong.
Upon all occasions we ought to have these maxims ready at hand:

Conduct me, Zeus, and thus, O Destiny,
Wherever your decrees have fixed my lot.
I follow cheerfully and,, did I not,
Wicked and wretched, I must follow still.8
Who’re yields properly to Fate is deemed
Wise among men, and knows the laws of Heaven.9
And the third:
“O Crito, if it thus pleases the gods, thus let it be.”10
“Anytus and Mellitus may kill me indeed; but hurt me they cannot.”11

Haha omg when i read this question i thought the exact same thing "getting expelled from hogwarts"

But I think pain or being stabbed in the back (not literally) by a loved one can be worse than death. Or even being stuck alone the rest of your life. People with bad lives think death is better than the way they are living now.

Hey dude,
Awesome question :-}

I'd love to know the answer,
so that I could try and keep my family, friends and myself out of its way...BUT
To be honest, the only person that can answer this question...Is the person that has tried everything on the menu, experienced all of life's tragedies.
That person doesn't exist, which makes this question unanswerable!
But, my opinion? Death could easily be a positive or negative thing depending on the situation and circumstances that come with it!
Somebody could have suffered all their life, and for their life to end would be putting an end to their suffering! This would be seen as a positive death. However, if somebody youthful who enjoyed life and was yet to achieve their dreams was to pass away, then this would be seen as a bad death.

Thank you
for opening up
my mind.........

Assuming you are saved...Something like the elephant man (Joseph Merrick) lived through would easily be worse than death. He required 3 operations at the age of 24 to be physically able to even speak.Every minute of every day he was treated as,and referred to as a freak, even to his face he had no name to most people.IF you are not saved....NOTHING could be worse than Hell....an eternity of smoke and pain, seperated from the love of the father...So in that case...Whatever you would have to endure in this life, even total paralysis,is FAR better than death.

I think being in pain, and suffering would be worse than death. Witnessing the death of one of my children to me would be worse than death.

PMS.. because sometimes it hurts so bad you wish you were dead....

seriously.....

watching someone you love being sick...and knowing they are going to die.. but also knowing that death is NOT the worst thing that could happen to them.. living in constant pain and suffering is far worse.
